  3. Which Kitchen Equipment Should I Refresh in 2021?
kitchen equipment

Some of your kitchen equipment are past restoration and simply need to be replaced every year or even sooner. We are here to share our tips on the equipment that need to be replaced regularly, to ensure your cooking & baking stays at the highest quality possible.

Luckily, most kitchen equipment remains in their prime if you treat them with care, which saves having to replace everything in your kitchen which would come as a cost to you.

Here is the kitchen equipment that you most likely need to refresh in 2021.

1. Knives, Peelers, Graters & Slicers

Over time, all these utensils can be worn down and become less effective to use and unfortunately are unable to be sharpened. It is best to replace once they are too blunt to produce a clean slice, grate, or peel.

Knives can also become dull but fortunately you can buy sharpening tools. With regular sharpening & honing you can increase the longevity of your trusted knife. Always be careful with cleaning & drying your knives, as rust spots can appear if not handled carefully; if this does happen, then maybe its time to replace them! We recommend Samura Knives as they use AUS-8 steel and thrive on their sharpness and durability.

2. Non-Stick Frying & Baking Pans

These handy pieces of kitchen equipment make washing up so much easier, but the more they are used the less reliable they become. Once the non-stick pans start to peel or becomes discoloured, it is then time to replace with new ones to ensure an easier clean up.

3. Wooden Equipment

If you care for your wooden kitchen equipment in the correct way, they should last forever. But split or warped wood can be a danger in the kitchen with potential contamination in the food prep area with shards of wood & other tiny particles. Therefore, it is important to have a specific care process to ensure the wood does not split or warp. To avoid this, keep up with the care of your wooden kitchen equipment by oiling them.

Wooden Equipment Care Process

Wipe wood and copper accents clean with only a damp cloth. Be careful not to soak or submerge the products in water. Occasionally rub with a food-safe mineral oil to prevent the wood from drying out. To sanitise, wash wood with a solution of 5 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Remove odours from wood by lightly rubbing with table salt & lemon juice. Always dry immediately & thoroughly.

4. Pastry Brushes

It is best to regularly replace pastry brushes when the bristles start to fall out, become dirty and greasy, or become stuck together. There are ways you can restore your pastry brushes if they become dirty or greasy, you can find how to do this here.

5. Multitasking Chopping Boards

No matter what material they are made from, chopping boards will need to be replaced regularly since they can attract unwanted bacteria which can transfer to different foods in the prep area. Plastic can be sterilised with food-safe scrubbing products, but once they become damaged you should replace them as you could run the risk of not cleaning them properly.
