  3. Six Reasons Why Today's Brit's Love Asian Food
Catering & Hospitality Innovation Blog News Content Image

When you look back at food trends lists over the last few years, Asian food has appeared high on the list in some way.

It’s grown from being a niche food over 15 years ago to one of the most popular food obsessions around the world. We’ve been exploring what makes this food so loveable amongst Brits, young and old, and discover why it’s becoming a staple in millennials’ diets.

Our Top 6

1. Asian food is packed full of vegetables and offers mainly fruit-based desserts. As a nation we are becoming much more health focused and health conscious as an understanding of the need for healthy eating grows. Rice is also the main ingredient in most dishes with bite-sized portions to add flavour.

2. When you eat Asian food, it creates a sense of adventure as it has a more exotic taste. Consumers are becoming more adventurous when dining out and are looking for something a little different from the norm. In 2016, research by Asian grocer Wing Yip found that people are more likely to eat Asian food in a restaurant than cook it at home.

3. Asian food is ideal for family occasions as it’s often a case of choosing a mix of smaller dishes with the opportunity to try a wider variety of flavours throughout the mealtime. When eating Asian cuisine, diners share dishes which makes it a more sociable and memorable occasion.

4. A millennial diner seeks new and different food options and is more health conscious than other generations. They are educated in food and want to know more about where their food comes from. Millennials are often looking for quick grab-and-go options that are easy to eat whilst on the move. Asian food fits into all these areas making it a popular choice for this generation. The Technomic’s Generational report found that 39% of millennials would like restaurants to offer more ethnic foods and beverages.

5. Asian food is known for being cleaner with fresh ingredients and little need for processed elements. Dishes are usually lower in carbohydrates and cholesterol. The way smaller portions are offered means that it’s less about needing to finish the food on your plate and more about eating bite-sized dishes until you are full.

6. The modern-day diner has a greater interest in trying new things. For example, previously Japanese would have just been about sushi and these days there’s more of an interest in other Asian styles, such as Korean food. Diners are craving more unique flavours and seasoning than the plainer food many of us have grown up with.

Steelite Craft

One brand which is ideal for serving Asian food on and in is Steelite and its range of Craft dishes.
