  3. Create a perfectly presented starter that every diner will love

We’ve just launched our third edition of the Lockhart Look Book which is packed full of ideas and inspiration for the perfect starter. For this week’s spotlight, we are exploring eight of the most popular options and revealing some of the creative ways you can display them.

With diners placing more emphasis on their health when eating out, many will prefer to opt for a starter and main course over a main and dessert if they only have room for two courses. A starter is the first experience your customers will have of your food, so you need to make sure the meal and presentation gets the lunch or dinner off to the best start. The first dish sets the expectation of what’s to come and over recent year’s chefs have placed more emphasis on this important first course.

We’ve just launched our third edition of the Lockhart Look Book which is packed full of ideas and inspiration for the perfect starter. For this week’s spotlight, we are exploring eight of the most popular options and revealing some of the creative ways you can display them.

1. Soups are one of the most traditional starters a chef can serve but with so many different flavour combinations and textures, the presentation can have a big impact on that first impression. If you tend to serve smaller portions, check out the Revol Basalt Bowl Slate Effect (BD309). This imitation slate bowl is made from black ceramic and is hard-wearing so doesn’t crumble or scratch. For a more traditional dish check out the Creme Cezanne Rim Soup Bowl (BH805) with its subtle sophistication.

2. Sharing platters are becoming more popular as more informal and relaxed eating styles are a current trend. As a more sociable way to start the meal you need to consider how you are serving the food. We’ve got so many options available for sharing dishes including wooden platters, bowls and paddles. Get some inspiration on pages 24 and 25 of our Look Book.

3. Seafood is a popular option for a starter, especially as some people prefer to save meat options for their main course. Showcase the colour of your starter using the Equinoxe Presentation Plate Cast (BJ338) which combines perfectly with other Revel collections. For those looking for a fine dining solution, take a look at the Créme Esprit Gourmet Bowl (BK509) with its sleek design and elegance. See the Equinoxe in action on our Instagram too.

4. Patè provides so many options to display your starter a little differently, from using jars to slates to plates. One of our favourites in the Look Book is the Club Rectangular Plate (BH714). It’s timeless but with modern colours providing a perfect porcelain piece to wow your guests.

5. Who doesn’t love Nachos with all the trimmings? It’s a perfect item to share with fellow diners but with so much to fit on the plate it’s important you choose the right one and pay attention to presentation. On page 18 and 19 of our Look Book you will discover everything from large and colourful bowls to enamel trays.

6. Bruschetta is another much-loved dish to begin a delicious meal. In our exclusive melamine range the Mirage Martello gives a trendy and creative look that will catch the eyes of consumers.

7. Bread is still traditionally served as a side to a starter and it’s becoming more common to see clever bread displays on tables. The Créme Jouet tableware is ideal for displaying bread and you can discover this trend on our Instagram channel as well as in our Look Book which is packed full of clever ideas.

8. Appetisers are such a simple way to whet the appetite of what’s to come. It’s an opportunity for you to show your creative flair. We love the unusual and unique ideas you can use in our Look Book with everything from wooden paddles to silver tumblers to presentation stands. Surprise your guests by being bold and breaking the mould.
