Sustainability and reducing waste is top of the agenda for many hospitality businesses and with a boom in the coffee market this is a perfect place to look for ways to be a little more eco-friendly within your business.
An article in The Independent last year revealed that in the UK, we use 7 million disposable coffee cups every day - that's 2.5 billion every year. Less than 1 per cent of coffee cups are recycled and in fact, half a million are wasted every day. One of the biggest issues with paper cups is that for them to hold liquid, the inside paper is bonded with plastic polyethylene. Once the cup is contaminated with the hot drink, it becomes even harder to recycle.
In 2017, Unilever revealed some research they did with consumers around sustainability in which the report shows a third of consumers prefer sustainable brands. More than one in five (21%) of the people surveyed said they would actively choose brands if they made their sustainability credentials clearer on their packaging and in their marketing. The importance of sustainability is growing all the time and especially with the huge focus on reducing plastic after The Blue Planet 2 aired later the same year.

This week we are putting the spotlight on the new 400ml Rice Husk Re-Usable Cups from Lockhart, available in 4 subtle colour options - Cream, Black, Grey & Green. These cups are made from:
It's got the same look and feel as a plastic cup and they are also break resistant, which makes them perfect for busy places where your daily cup get regular use. Whether it's battling the hustle and bustle of your daily commute to work, on the train, stored in your backpack or kept in hand (and maybe dropped a few times!)
You will also find the biodegradable Rice Husk cup keeps drinks warmer for longer…the double-walled design keeps the heat in and a sealed silicon ring lid helps to reduce spills. And not only that, but when coffee cups are being re-used consistently, you need a quick and easy way to make sure they are fully-cleaned and these are completely dishwasher safe.

For those who don't know, rice husk is the brown outer shell that rice comes in and is an agricultural waste. At the end of its lifespan, your rice husk cups can become part of nature again. Annually, the world's rice production is approximately 500 million tonnes. Of this, the ratio of rice husk to rice is approximately 1:4, which is usually incinerated. It's great a use has been found to further reduce waste and pollution and Lockhart is delighted to be launching these Biodegradable cups this month.
This eco-friendly cup is helping the environment in several exciting ways. There is the obvious reduction in the 2.5 billion single-use cups being discarded every year, but also the product is made from an often discarded bi-product of rice. It's win-win!
These new Rice Husk cups are long-lasting alternative to one-use plastic throw-away cups, as unrecycled plastic takes hundreds of years to break-down but these Rice Husk cups are biodegradable in approximately just 2-3 years in soil.
