  3. Will You ‘Beat’ Our Tough Kitchen Utensil Quiz?
will you beat our tough feature
Any chef worth their baking beans has a drawer (or four) full of kitchen utensils, with spatulas, ladles, and various shapes and styles of spoons galore, and not to mention several different unidentifiable gadgets. To the uninitiated most of the tools must look exactly the same; to you, each has its own precise purpose, and to use it for any other would be akin to sacrilege.

It’s for chefs like you that we created our latest quiz, to test your knowledge of some of the strangest looking and most oddly-named utensils that are frequently found in commercial kitchens. We believe that our kitchen utensil quiz will truly separate the head chefs from the apparatus amateurs, or maybe even introduce you to a utensil or two that you’re yet to add to your arsenal – take the quiz below and let us know how you fared!

Choosing kitchen utensils for your commercial kitchen

All joking aside, choosing kitchen utensils for a busy commercial kitchen is serious business, as they’re crucial to enabling chefs and kitchen staff to be efficient with their time and resources, work to their very highest standards every day, and produce the very best looking and tasting food possible. Kitchen utensils must be tough, easy to use and clean, fit for their purpose and also be good value for money. At Lockhart Catering Equipment you’ll find an exceptional selection of commercial kitchen utensils that are designed to meet the unique demands of a busy restaurant or café kitchen, so that your service can always run smoothly.

But when choosing your kitchen utensils, there are a few important things to consider, especially with so many different types and styles to choose from. Here’s a checklist that we’d recommend following when buying utensils and equipment for your kitchen:

  • Does it suit my menu? – This one may seem obvious, but when you have so many utensils to choose from, it’s important to only buy those that you’re going to use. Thoroughly consider your menu and the tools that you’ll actually need to produce each item, and put only those on your shopping list.
  • Is it easy to use? – Time is precious in a commercial kitchen, so easy to use kitchen utensils are crucial.
  • Is it easy to clean? – Perhaps the most important consideration of all is how easy to clean and maintain each utensil will be. Before purchasing, check the cleaning instructions for each one, in particular whether it’s safe for cleaning in the dishwasher.
  • Are they fit for purpose? – We’re all guilty of choosing something just because it looks good, but kitchen utensils need to be fit for purpose and also able to stand up to regular, or even constant, use. Consider whether a utensil looks like it will go the distance in your kitchen, and don’t forget to read customer product reviews if they’re available.
  • Do I need to buy several of them? – For the most frequently-used utensils you may find it necessary to buy several, not only to avoid having to clean them several times a day but also to prevent cross-contamination, particularly where allergens are concerned. At Lockhart we stock a wide selection of colour-coded allergen equipment and allergen utensils that make it easy for you to distinguish between utensils for each particular use.
