We have researched drink trends that we think will make an appearance this year

As we continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, we have witnessed how it has affected the mindset of consumers when it comes to purchasing food and drink. Although it is hard to predict trends during these unprecedented times – we have researched drink trends that we think will make an appearance this year.

Bag-in-Box Wine

Last year Sainsbury’s revealed their ‘Plate of the Nation’ report which showed that 6.8 million people bought bag-in-box wine during the UK lockdown, this was a growth of 41% year-on-year and more than 1 in 4 of these consumers were aged 25-34.

The rise of sales has led us to predict that this trend will continue into 2021 due to the ongoing closure of the hospitality sector. Why are consumers opting for bag-in-box wine compared to bottled? This is because they can bulk buy on larger containers that will keep their wine fresh for a maximum of six weeks once opened.

Low/No Alcohol Beverages

According to the market research company Nielsen, low- and no-alcohol sales increased by 32.5% immediately before the March lockdown as shoppers stockpiled to moderate their drinking.

We expect this trend to continue with consumers focused on moving towards a healthier lifestyle, this was started off with Dry January (going alcohol-free for the month of January). A YouGov survey showed that 57% of adults would consider drinking a low-alcohol beverage when the pubs reopen. Read Which’s article on the best non-alcoholic beer to try this year.

Craft Beer

The COVID-19 pandemic took a huge hit on the Craft Beer industry, with over eighty percent of independent brewers experiencing falling sales according to Statista.

We are predicting a rise in sales during 2021 as brewers have started to introduce delivery services, such as Beer Hawk, Beerwulf and Beer52. A survey by Siba shows that 70% of breweries are offering new delivery or takeaway services to help supply their local communities with quality independent craft beer, with around 61% of those breweries now offering free delivery to local beer lovers.

As we continue in lockdown across the UK, the delivery services will be beneficial to the Craft Beer industry and will stop unnecessary trips to supermarkets.

Hard Seltzers

Hard Seltzers have already made their mark in the US as the market grew by 200% according to Good Beer Hunting; and now we predict them to be a growing trend in the UK. The new drink refers to a mildly fruit-flavoured alcoholic beverage, typically canned, tipping the scales at just 100 calories or fewer and with an alcohol volume of around 5%.

The Grocer has revealed all the hard seltzers you can find in the UK and where you can purchase them, one of these is Balans which was first launched in Asda but has since rolled out in Tesco.
