The types of chefs’ shoes to choose from

Slip-ons and clogs

Slip-ons and clogs have long been a staple for kitchen workers, but why do chefs wear clogs? Ultimately, the lack of laces makes for one less hazard to have to worry about! Slip-ons are also quick and easy to put on, as well as lightweight for those busier shifts. Traditionally, these shoes come with a loose fit too, which allow the foot to bend and expand naturally without compromising on comfort.

Trainers

Also well-suited to front-of-house staff, trainers make for a lightweight and stylish option for chefs. Trainers are also versatile so they can be worn with any type of uniform, which makes them one of the best shoes for food service workers. However, crucially, conventional trainers aren’t slip proof so always buy specialist anti-slip chef’s trainers that are specifically designed for the demands of commercial kitchens.

Shoes

Traditionally styled chef’s shoes make a great option for a chef’s uniform, as they always look smart whilst guarding the wearer against slips in the kitchen. Available in lace-up or lace-free, slip-on styles, a full chef’s shoe can be worn by front-of-house too. If working with knives or carrying heavy equipment, a hard shoe option may offer the wearer confidence that their toes are protected!

Boots

When it comes to chefs’ shoes, boots are a very safe option. Traditionally, a boot will be durable, waterproof and fit to defend against most hazards in a restaurant kitchen. Though they’re a little more heavyweight than alternatives, they’re also supportive and built to last.

What to consider when choosing chef’s footwear

Now that we’ve covered the basic types of chefs’ shoes, it’s time to choose which type is best for you.

To stepping into a commercial kitchen with confidence your footwear must offer protection against a myriad of hazards, from slippery floors and rogue knives to hot liquids and heavy equipment. All of these hazards, and more, make it hard to decipher what type of shoes should be worn in the kitchen.

Below, we’ve recommended a few things to take into consideration to help you you make an informed decision.

Are the shoes made from a suitable material?

Whether you’re in the kitchen or front of house, the material of your shoes must be durable and versatile. Leather or synthetic shoes are best for protecting against hazards, though aren’t as lightweight as alternatives, such as EVA. Unlike leather alternatives, shoes made from EVA are much more adaptable and can mould around your feet for maximum comfort.

However, it’s also important to find shoes that can protect against burns. For example, the Cabbie Anti Slip Trainer comes with added Spill Guard. This is a protective membrane lining or material overlay that creates a barrier around the shoe to defend against hot liquids.

Are the shoes comfortable?

A long, busy service is taxing to say the least. But, it’s made worse by aching feet. When searching for chef’s footwear, stay on the lookout for footwear that’s supportive and comfortable.

Many shoe designs are fit for purpose, and come designed to support you throughout your shift. For example, the Tulsa Safety Hardshoe that has enCounter heel support to hold your foot in place and support your feet for improved comfort.

Are the shoes safe and practical?

It’s important to make sure your choice of footwear can protect you against common kitchen hazards. Fortunately, there are plenty of brands that offer reinforced footwear to take care of your feet. One example is the Tuf Black Basic Lace Up Safety Shoe that has a pierce resistant steel midsole and toecap.

Slip-resistant footwear is crucial in restaurant kitchens, where spillages are commonplace. You can be prepared for any potential hazards with slip-resistant shoes, such as the Liberty Anti Slip Trainer that’s water resistant, and comes with Mighty Grip slip-resistant outsole. Other factors to consider include whether you need a shoe that comes with spill protection, and TripGuard for maximum safety.

Are the shoes stylish and fit for purpose?

Though it may not be your biggest priority, it’s important to have a kitchen team that’s looking sharp! This is particularly important for front-of-house staff.

The Sharp Chef EVA Black Trainer is functional, but doesn’t compromise on style. Designed to replicate conventional trainers, this shoe is also extremely lightweight and comes with a fit that’s moulded to your feet for plenty of comfort.
