From savoury cocktails and fruit-infused gins, to on-trend flavoured whiskeys that take an old favourite up a gear, standing out in the competitive drinks market is about continual development and innovation. Often it involves updating an old favourite in line with current dining and drinking trends; currently sending mixologists into meltdown are alcoholic milkshakes, the ultimate indulgence now with a boozy twist!

First popularised by American teens in 1950s diners, milkshakes have become iconic and there are plenty of familiar flavours to use as a starting point for your adult-only versions. However, while it’s easy to add a shot of bourbon or a dash of rum to a classic cookies and cream or strawberry milkshake, this summer’s alcoholic milkshake trend is not simply about creating drinkable desserts. Today we’re looking at how to start whipping up some more creative alcoholic milkshakes with tempting flavour combination ideas, plus the essential tools and equipment you’ll require to add these grown-up treats to your menu.

Meltdown alcoholic milkshake flavour combinations

The new spiked milkshake trend is absolutely about flavour combinations that have been created with adults in mind, laced with the likes of bourbon, rum, vodka, fruit liquors or even tequila. As you can see from the intriguing ‘boozy milkshake’ or ‘hard shake’ menus of restaurants like Almost Famous and MEATLiquor, super-sweet flavours are being saved for the kids, while the adults can sip on decadent dairy drinks with high-quality ingredients that are far more ‘cocktail hour’ than ‘kid’s party’.

We suggest you experiment with a gentlemanly bourbon, bacon and maple shake, or perhaps your own take on a summer iced coffee. Try adding fruit (for those customers who might be concerned about getting their ‘five a day’) shakes and spiking them with liquors like Framboise and Crème de Fraise.

Indulge chocoholics with a shake combining kirsch, chocolate brownie and dark cherry sauce. And, keep vegans or those avoiding dairy pleased by offering options made with sorbet, or refreshing tropical coconut or banana ice cream – these dairy-free alcoholic milkshakes work well with white rum plus lime or dark chocolate shavings.

Don’t forget to complete your milkshake masterpieces with creative garnishes such as whipped cream, cake chunks or biscuit crumbs, fresh berries, fun rainbow or chocolate sprinkles or tangy fruit sauces.

Equipment to help you shake, rattle and roll…

Keep ice cream on hand to create your milkshake creations with a small tabletop freezer behind the bar, stocked with a selection of ice cream flavours – or could you even take your alcoholic milkshakes to the next level by making your own ice cream in-house? Whatever you choose, make sure your frozen drinks are ready to blend with a high-performance blender such as the Hamilton Beach Tempest Blender, which is designed for high density blending and offers variable speed, pulse and timer settings.

Once you’ve mixed together your own flavour combinations, dressing your milkshakes using some standout glassware will ensure they look extra special; after all, you don’t want these premium milkshake to be mistaken for just another dessert or drink!

Give your spiked milkshakes the extra ‘cool factor’ by serving them up in on-trend handled jar glasses, such as the Quattro Stag Jar, or the sleek tall Arcoroc Lizz Glass that show off the colours, layers or drizzles in the drinks. Or for something a little more unusual, how about these refined Utopia Copper Mugs or understated Brushed Steel Tumblers - they look fantastic when piled high with cream and garnishes.

Alcoholic milkshakes are the perfect complement to menus with an emphasis on gourmet burgers or BBQ and take your drinks offering from day to night with ease, but they are equally at home as a luxury seasonal addition to your summer cocktail list. Is it time for your restaurant or bar to shake, rattle and roll spiked milkshakes onto your drinks menu?
