In recent times cider seems to have undergone something of a rebirth...

The Trend

Was there ever a drink with a bigger image problem than cider? Loved by some, but largely ignored by the majority of mainstream beer drinkers, by the late 1990’s cider appeared to be deeply unfashionable and struggling to find its niche in the market with falling sales and declining consumer interest.

But more recently cider seems to have undergone something of a rebirth with new alternative fruit ciders helping to drive volumes in the UK to record levels with industry sales approaching the £1 billion mark.

But this has been an unlikely turnaround in fortunes as initial attempts to modernise cider’s fading image three or four years ago with the launch of new pear-based ciders were something of a flop. But the last 12 months has seen a huge growth in non-apple-based ciders with almost 100 new products launched, covering an adventurous variety of different fruits and flavours. From black cherry to blackberry, raspberry to strawberry, not to mention elderflower and lime and endless other combinations with names like ‘Orchard Fruit Cider’ or ‘Five Fruit Harvest Cider’ it seems like the whole industry is determined to find the most exotic and refreshing combinations of fruit possible.

All the leading brands now offer new fruit-based products and have been spending millions of pounds on advertising campaigns to attract a new younger audience to cider drinking. And the results suggest that the combination of new flavours supported by increased marketing activity is having the desired effect. Sales of fruit-based ciders now represent around 15% of total cider sales having grown from just 2% in 2005 and all the signs are that this is a trend that’s set to continue.

So, if the flavours have got wilder and the customers younger, then the glasses these new ciders are served in need to be equally adventurous. We’ve put together a selection of glasses that we think will appeal to this new audience and really complement the riot of colours and flavours that cider now offers. Have a look at the free online copy of Trend Set Magazine for the full ranges we offer.
