  3. Craft Rum's Time Is Here

Premium-level craft rums are trending towards a higher place in terms of quality & reputation, and the sector's growth is accelerating especially when compared to standard rum.

The Trend

A decade ago, your local pub would offer a limited choice of rum – a light Cuban-style rum like Barcardi, a navy-style rum such as Lamb’s; or possibly a Caribbean-style rum such as Mount Gay.

Fast forward to today and there are in excess of 300 varieties of rum available in the UK. So what has led to this extraordinary explosion in the range of rums available and how can bars, restaurants and hotels take advantage of this rum renaissance?

To a large extent rum has benefitted from the overall expansion of craft spirits which was driven initially by the huge growth of botanical gins. That interest in craft spirits is helping to drive the rum category to a whole new level.

As a result new premium-level craft rums are trending towards a higher place in terms of quality and reputation and the segment’s growth is accelerating compared to standard and white rums.

Flexible & Versatile

Another reason for rum’s growing popularity stems from its flexible and versatile nature. It also has a lot more personality and character than other spirits and this has really allowed it to capitalise on the growing trend for classic cocktails. Cocktail bars are reintroducing classics like the Mai Tai or Long Island Iced Tea, but with quality ingredients. Customers increasingly want more than just the basics and even with a classic rumbased cocktail like a Mojito they are open to trying something a little different, like a dark craft rum.

The evolving interest in higher-end rums has brought a raft of new competition into the market and many bars are now offering a huge variety of aged rums. Whether it’s the rum’s regional origins, the style of rum-making or even the significance that rum has had in shaping cocktail history, craft rums are winning a whole new generation of admirers.

As consumers look for new and sometimes even local craft rum options, there has never been a better time for the industry to capitalise on this trend. But this new generation of rum drinkers will also expect their choice of drink to be served in something more innovative than a standard tumbler.

We think you’ll like our carefully selected range of glassware to create a new look for the new premium world of rum drinking.
